Andaman islands: Thailand’s top boat routes

Explore Andaman islands highlights in Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga, from James Bond Island to Phi Phi, lagoons and low-tide walks.

For visitors planning Andaman islands day trips, the key choice is between dramatic limestone scenery, clear-water snorkeling, and quiet lagoons that are best reached by boat.

The Andaman islands around Phuket, Krabi and Khao Lak bring together two different kinds of scenery: steep limestone formations and calm tropical waters. For many visitors, that mix is the main reason to book boat-based day trips rather than focus on a single beach.

Phang Nga Bay and its limestone icons

Phang Nga Bay is defined by hundreds of vertical limestone islands and cliffs rising from green-grey water. The setting is dramatic and best taken in from the sea. One of its best-known landmarks is James Bond Island, or Koh Ta Pu, which became famous worldwide after the 1974 film The Man with the Golden Gun.

Koh Ta Pu is a central tourist stop, but it is small and often crowded. For that reason, the most practical way to enjoy it is from a boat. Many tours also include Koh Panyee, the floating village built on stilts, and the Hong Islands in Phang Nga, where narrow hidden caves lead into a large enclosed lagoon.

Phi Phi for clear water and snorkeling

In contrast, the Phi Phi archipelago is known for turquoise water, clear visibility and some of the region’s strongest snorkeling conditions. It is one of the most requested stops on Andaman islands itineraries from Phuket and Krabi.

Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi Leh became famous through the film The Beach. Early morning sunrise tours are recommended to help avoid crowds. Even when access to the beach itself is limited, the bay cruise remains a major highlight because of the surrounding vertical cliffs.

  • Monkey Beach and Viking Cave are often added to Phi Phi boat routes.
  • The waters around the islands are among the best in the region for coral viewing.

Hong Lagoon and quieter kayaking

The Hong Islands, part of Than Bok Khorani National Park near Krabi, offer a different pace. Hong means “room” or “inside,” which fits the landscape well. Hong Lagoon is reached through a narrow passage, then opens into a round, sheltered lagoon with shallow turquoise water and high cliffs all around.

This is one of the best places for kayaking in the Andaman islands because the water is calm and the setting is quiet. It is also the area where many visitors feel closest to a private island atmosphere, even on a shared tour.

Low tide crossings and hidden beaches

Chicken Island, or Koh Gai, is part of the Four Islands area near Krabi and is easy to recognize by its chicken-shaped rock. Nearby, Thale Waek, or the “separated sea,” appears at low tide as a sandbar linking Koh Tup, Koh Mor and Chicken Island. When conditions are right, visitors can walk between the islands on dry ground.

Tay Lay Beach is another quieter stop, often near the Hong Islands or Ko Yao Yai. With soft sand and shallow warm water, it works well as a lunch or rest stop after a more active boat route. For travelers comparing Andaman islands options, it is a reminder that the region is not only about famous bays, but also about hidden places designed for slower time on the water.
