The Bangkok to Ayutthaya train service will begin daily runs on 1 August, giving travellers a cheaper air-conditioned alternative on one of Thailand’s most popular short routes.

Thailand’s State Railway is adding a new daily link that should make short trips north of Bangkok easier to plan. The Bangkok to Ayutthaya train service, called SRT Bangkok Connex, begins on 1 August and is designed to offer comfort at a very low fare.

A direct link for commuters and visitors

The new service connects Krung Thep Aphiwat station in Bangkok with historic Ayutthaya. That makes the Bangkok to Ayutthaya train useful for both local commuters and travellers heading out for a same-day heritage visit.

Rail authorities say the route is intended to simplify transfers and fit better with the city rail network. For visitors, that means a more straightforward way to reach one of Thailand’s best-known former capitals without relying on road transport.

Modernised Japanese-built carriages

The Bangkok to Ayutthaya train will use refurbished KIHA 40/48 diesel railcars imported from Japan. The interiors have been thoroughly updated, with efficient air-conditioning and wider, more comfortable seats.

That is a notable change from older third-class cars, which are often associated with this route. The new setup should make the ride more pleasant in Thailand’s heat, especially for passengers travelling at midday or carrying bags for a day out.

Timetable and launch fares

On weekdays, the Bangkok to Ayutthaya train will operate six times a day. The first departure leaves at 5:15 in the morning, which mainly suits commuters.

At weekends, the pattern shifts to support sightseeing. There will be four services, with the first train leaving at 9:05, leaving time for a slower hotel morning before heading to Ayutthaya.

Launch fares are also low. From 1 August to 31 October, tickets from Bangkok to intermediate stations such as Don Mueang or Rangsit will cost 30 baht. The full journey to Ayutthaya will cost no more than 50 baht.

  • Start date: 1 August
  • Weekdays: 6 departures
  • Weekends: 4 departures
  • Promotional fares: 30 baht to Don Mueang or Rangsit, up to 50 baht to Ayutthaya

For travellers looking for a low-cost rail excursion, the Bangkok to Ayutthaya train offers a practical new option with air-conditioning, modernised seating and a timetable that works for both early commuters and weekend visitors.
