Mekong Tourism Forum returns to Yangon in 2026

Mekong Tourism Forum returns to Yangon in June 2026 as MTCO shifts from old campaigns to new people-centred Mekong tourism priorities.

Mekong Tourism Forum 2026 is set for Yangon, but the bigger story is how the Mekong Tourism Forum is changing its promotional model, leaving behind once-popular marketing campaigns and turning toward new people-focused initiatives.

Mekong Tourism Forum 2026 will bring regional tourism leaders to Yangon, Myanmar, from 16 to 18 June. The event marks the forum’s return to the country after 24 years and puts the Mekong Tourism Forum back in a city that last hosted it in 2002.

Why Yangon matters now

Organised by the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office, the meeting will gather public- and private-sector representatives to examine how tourism can create real value for people and places. The 2026 theme, “Tourism for people, travel with purpose,” signals a clear shift in emphasis.

That return is also framed by the disruption that kept the forum out of Bagan in 2020 and 2021. Those plans were derailed first by the COVID-19 pandemic and then by travel restrictions after the military coup in February 2021.

What happened to the old campaigns

Between 2017 and 2021, the Mekong Tourism Forum became known for marketing ideas that highlighted smaller tourism businesses across the region. Campaigns such as “Mekong Minis and Moments,” “Mekong Heroes” and “Experience Mekong Showcases” gave visibility to firms, individuals and startups in tourism and hospitality.

In total, nine initiatives were created by MTCO and curated by the marketing agency Destination Mekong. They were designed to support small and medium-sized enterprises in six countries: Cambodia, China, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam.

Those projects proved popular with delegates because they offered a direct platform for lesser-known operators. But since 2021, the campaigns have no longer been active within MTCO’s work. They were parked on the Destination Mekong website and have not reappeared at later editions of the forum.

A new strategy for the Mekong region

Jens Thraenhart, the former executive director of MTCO and founder of Destination Mekong, said Destination Mekong is now dormant and has no current activity. He added that options are being assessed to move the projects back under MTCO so their value is not lost, although MTCO has not indicated interest in relaunching them.

Dee Suvimol Thanasarakij, the current executive director of MTCO, said the marketing initiatives have evolved with changing priorities and the new GMS Tourism Strategy 2030. MTCO is now focusing on new programmes, including the interview series “Mekong Voices,” which promotes local voices and people-centred tourism development.

The registration status of Destination Mekong in Singapore also indicates that the company is “in the process of being struck off” the register.

Why travellers should notice

For international travellers, the practical takeaway is not a booking alert but a branding shift. The Mekong Tourism Forum is moving away from centralised promotional campaigns and toward locally grounded storytelling. That may make it harder to find one single platform for deals or small-business showcases, but it also points to a stronger emphasis on authentic experiences.

Visitors interested in the Mekong region may increasingly encounter tourism messaging built around local communities, local voices and direct support for neighbourhood businesses rather than broad regional promotions.
