Thailand’s tourism office is expanding the Weibo partnership to reach premium Chinese visitors, improve trip information and support easier digital payments and Chinese-language services.
On 19 September 2026, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) deepened its Weibo partnership with the Chinese social platform during a meeting at its headquarters in Bangkok. The talks focused on new ways to work together and on attracting higher-spending visitors from China.
Targeting the premium market
The discussion was not just about visibility. TAT and Weibo said the shared goal is to draw travellers from the premium segment, with well-known online creators expected to play an important role. Weibo reaches hundreds of millions of users every day, which gives the arrangement wide potential influence.
For Thailand, that scale matters because it can carry tourism messages quickly across a large Chinese audience. The emphasis is on stronger promotion of Thai festivals and on sharing safer, verified travel information.
Digital payments and Chinese-language support
The Weibo partnership also covers practical services. TAT and its Chinese counterpart discussed expanding digital payment options for foreign guests so Chinese visitors can pay more easily for services across the country.
Another planned area is dedicated Chinese-language support. That would make travel simpler for visitors who prefer to arrange details, ask questions or navigate services in Chinese rather than relying only on other languages.
- better visibility for Thai tourism campaigns
- more convenient digital payments for visitors from China
- more Chinese-language information and support
Why this matters for Thailand
The business value of the Weibo partnership goes beyond marketing. If the cooperation works as intended, it could help Thailand convert online reach into actual arrivals, spending and repeat visits.
It also reflects how tourism boards now compete for attention through digital ecosystems, not only through traditional advertising. In Thailand’s case, the Chinese market remains large enough that even a single platform partnership can have measurable effects for hotels, attractions and related services.
A possible annual gala
One more possibility emerged from the 2026 edition: the partners are considering making the Weibo Gala in Thailand an annual event. The gala attracts major Asian internet stars and would give the country significant media exposure if it becomes a regular fixture.
For now, it remains a plan under discussion. But if the Weibo partnership develops as outlined, Thailand could gain a stronger link to one of the most influential digital audiences in the region.
