Thailand has utilized the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok to cast itself as a 'trusted connector,' aiming to guide 191 nations through current geopolitical and economic volatility.
A Historic Gathering in Bangkok
The Queen Sirikit National Convention Center hosted the 2026 IMF–World Bank Group Annual Meetings from October 12 to 18. The event marked a significant milestone in the host country’s history. Over 19,000 people registered, which is the highest total ever recorded for the summit. Representatives from 191 countries gathered to discuss the future of the global economy amid rising uncertainty.
The Bangkok Dialogue Notes
Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Ekniti Nitithanprapas unveiled the “Bangkok Dialogue Notes.” This collection of reflections is designed to turn high-level discussions into practical cooperation. Ekniti compared Thailand’s role to the figure at the front of the Royal Barge Suphannahong, setting the direction for others to row in unison through rough waters.
The vision is built on five core themes: people-centred resilience, stronger domestic trust, lasting local capabilities, practical international cooperation, and trusted global connections. The framework emphasizes that global connectivity requires trust at the local level. This ensures that international investments benefit local communities directly.
Strategic Priorities and Digital Innovation
Thailand identified several strategic priorities to translate these principles into action. A key focus is “trusted digital futures,” highlighted by the Nok Krasip initiative. This program provides street vendors with AI tools to analyze sales and manage costs. The government is also promoting the Bangkok Blueprint for Fraud-Resilient Financial Services to combat cross-border financial scams.
Beyond digital trust, the Host Country Programme focuses on diversifying supply chains and accelerating the transition to clean energy. As a model for regional cooperation, Ekniti highlighted the advancement of the ASEAN Power Grid. This project could see hydropower from Laos transmitted through Thailand and Malaysia to Singapore and Indonesia.
Domestic Growth Targets
While steering global dialogue, the Finance Minister also outlined ambitious domestic goals. Thailand aims to increase its potential economic growth rate to over 3%. Additionally, the government wants to raise investment levels to 30% of the gross domestic product (GDP). These targets ensure the country remains competitive while equipping its workforce for global supply chains.
